Breast reduction surgery, also known as breast reduction mammoplasty, helps patients who want to reduce the size extra-large breasts, while also improving their shape. In addition to the unsightly appearance, patients frequently complain of back and shoulder pain, difficulty breathing and skin irritation under the breast. For this reason, this is the surgery that corrects gigantomastia, which can be quite damaging for the spine.
This breast reduction surgery involves the removal of fat, glandular tissue and excess skin, simultaneously reducing the size of the areola, as well as repositioning or lifting the breast , as close as possible to its normal position.
The problem of extra-large breasts is often associated with overweight people. On the other hand, there are also women with a normal weight who are bothered by their overly large bust. Therefore, you can turn to cosmetic breast surgery, opting for a breast reduction mammoplasty operation if you have heavy or sagging breasts, with areolae and nipples positioned too low, if you have voluminous breasts, or if one breast is larger than the other. You can also have this procedure if you have back, neck and shoulder pain that is caused strictly by the weight of the breast, and if your physical activities are restricted. Furthermore, breast reduction is also indicated if you frequently experience irritation of the skin under the breasts. On the other hand, you should keep in mind that you can not resort to this intervention if your breasts are growing, you are breastfeeding or if 6 months have not elapsed since breastfeeding.
At the first consultation, we will do a general health assessment and then we will discuss the
surgical technique. We will also measure the breasts and agree on the new shape and positioning.
Then come the usual health checks. In addition to these, an imaging examination, i.e. a mammogram,
must also be performed.
If you want harmoniously sized breasts by this
intervention, we will have to discuss all the medications you are taking, including vitamins,
contraceptives or weight loss drugs. It is advisable to discontinue contraceptives 4-6 weeks before
surgery and aspirin-based medications at least 2 weeks in advance. In addition, you should avoid
tobacco, stop dieting and avoid excessive sun exposure.
It is important to know that the
operation cannot be performed during or near your menstrual period. Also, you should keep in mind
that on the day of surgery you should not consume food or liquids of any kind at least 6 hours
before the procedure.

The recovery period after breast reduction surgery is between 2 weeks and 2 months. It is important to know there are several stages to this recovery, but you can go to work even after the first 7 days. However, you should avoid lifting weights or overexerting yourself.
In the first 24 hours after surgery, the breasts will be dressed. After the first postoperative day you will wear a corset for 4 - 6 weeks, then you will need a bustier with a lower degree of compression than the corset. As far as the pain is concerned, you should know that this only occurs in the first 24 hours, when you are given anti-inflammatory drugs. What's important to know is that you can return to your usual physical activities even after the first week, but without overexertion or lifting weights. Moreover, it is necessary to avoid sun exposure during the first 3 months after surgery.
The final result of a breast reduction operation can be assessed one year after surgery. The size and shape of your breasts may vary depending on certain hormonal changes, weight changes or a possible pregnancy. Moreover, you should know that scars are permanent, but they fade over time. The scars will be red for the first few months after surgery, then will turn white. In most cases they become simple lines, very hard to notice.
When talking about risks, we think first and foremost of general complications, which are common in all surgical operations. These include:
Besides these, there are other, quite rare, complications to be aware of:
